Workers spark fury after being caught throwing out boxes of fresh food

New York City workers prompted fury after they were filmed throwing pallet after pallet of fresh food into a garbage truck after allegations that the stall owner didn't have the proper permit.

Diana Hernandez Cruz has been selling produce at the side of the road in the Bronx, New York for years.

But allegedly, the mom didn't have the proper permits.

In the video, sanitation crews can be seen throwing box after box of fresh fruit and vegetables into a garbage truck, with an angry crowd protesting behind them.

Critics said the move was tone-deaf to food insecurity felt in the city.

It was reported that food vendors said businesses aren't getting the permits they need fast enough.

The Department of Sanitation said the food was abandoned and needed to be disposed of for safety reasons.

Speaking to ABC, The New York City Department of Sanitation, said: "This video shows a small portion of an unfortunate situation, where abandoned material needed to be disposed of for the safety of the community.

"The Department of Sanitation is committed to our mission of keeping streets and neighborhoods safe, clean, and healthy."

The video was filmed on September 25.
