Michael Glodek has been creating unique and creative cake designs for his sons' birthdays in what has quickly become a family tradition.

They take up to five hours to create - and don't always go to plan, said the independent carpentry contractor from Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.

His favorite designs are SpongeBob SquarePants and Lightening McQueen from Cars.

"It all just started when my eldest was about two years old, we just started asking what cake he wanted for his birthday," said Glodek, 43.

"My grandma used to make cookies when I was much younger and I would always help her make them.

"I would normally make them on the Friday night, once the boys have gone to bed and usually takes me around four to five hours to put them together, sometimes working until 2 or 3 in the morning!

"I was putting together a 3D dinosaur cake model and as I stacked the layers up, it lost hold and just all fell apart!"

What started as a little hobby has seen lots of interaction on social media after Michael's wife, Kendra Glodek, 45, uploaded a video of the creations onto TikTok.

Kendra, who works as a second grade teacher at a local elementary school says it's thanks to Michael's carpenter skills that he is able to put these cakes together.

"I did not expect the reaction at all, it has all been very surprising," she said.

"Michael has always been a bit of a perfectionist and being good at his regular job as a carpentry contractor - those skills just sort of carried on through to this."

Online fans urged the pair to open their own cake shop.

"I could definitely see that happening when he retires from his day job maybe but for now I don't think so," said Kendra.

Ultimately though, this is a family thing and both Kendra and Michael take great pleasure at their kid's little faces when they get to see what their dad has created.

The couple shares two sons, ages 6 and 8.

"The boys are always so ecstatic! They run down to the kitchen in the morning to see what their dad has created and their faces light up!" said Kendra.

Michael added: "Our younger kid probably doesn't quite understand what it is all about yet, but hopefully one day they will go, 'Gee Dad, those cakes you used to make - they were pretty cool,'" Glodek said.
