A lucky female motorist had a miracle escape from death after her car skidded onto a level crossing and was stuck by a passenger train today (December 7).

The white seat hatchback was crumpled and shunted off the tracks after the train with 50 passengers on board crashed into it at Frating, Essex, England.

The car became stuck on the tracks after reportedly skidding on ice.

The driver escaped the vehicle moments before the Greater Anglia commuter service crashed into the rear of the car.

No one was injured in the incident.

A probe has been launched by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch alongside Greater Anglia, British Transport Police and Network Rail.

Incident Commander Dave Bond, of Essex Fire Service, said: "We believe the car ended up on the level crossing after skidding on some ice.

"The driver was then unable to move her vehicle before the next train came through the crossing.

"Thankfully the driver escaped from her car before the train arrived, and although the train struck the car, there are no injuries to the vehicle driver, the train driver or any passengers.

"We're now working in partnership with other agencies and waiting for instructions from the Railway Incident Officer on our next steps to clear the scene and make sure it's safe.

"The road is likely to be closed for some time before the train can be moved so please avoid the area."

The line is currently blocked due to the incident.

Greater Anglia states on its website: "Due to a train hitting a road vehicle at a level crossing between Great Bentley and Alresford, Essex all lines are blocked.

"Train services running through these stations may be cancelled or revised."
