The NASA HQ Photo team have selected their 100 best images from 2021.

Rather than just images of outer space, these photographs document many scenes from Earth as different launch preps are carried out.

In April, there is the impressive sight of the pre-launch Soyuz rocket being rolled out by train at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, while in May a SpaceX Crew Dragon Resilience spacecraft is retrieved from the Gulf of Mexico after landing.

In June, the International Space Station, with a crew of seven onboard, is seen in silhouette as it transits the Sun, while December saw the ghostly aerial bloom of a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket launching from Cape Canaveral.

A poignant image from Arlington National Cemetery, in January, depicts NASA personnel commemorating the memory of the men and women who lost their lives in the quest for space exploration.
