This stunning image captures one of the brightest galaxies close to our own in superb detail.

The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) is only visible in the southern hemisphere and appears to the naked eye as a dull patch of light in the night sky, next to the Milky Way.

Despite being a dwarf galaxy, the SMC contains several hundred million stars whose light has taken a staggering 200,000 years to reach planet Earth.

At its center is a brilliant cluster of very bright stars surrounded by a dark, distinct ridge of dust and gas caused by a torrent of radiation from the galaxy's core.

The photograph was taken by NASA using the Hubble Space Telescope.

The SMC is the sister galaxy of the Large Magellan Cloud (LMC) which also spins around the Milky Way.

The two galaxies take their name from Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan who was the first European to spot them during an expedition to the southern hemisphere in 1519.
