A canny dad bought a $30,000 shipping container online from China and turned it into a luxury rentable home.

Real estate expert Zackary South, 28, bought a property on a one-acre plot and found a Chinese company that sold and shipped portable container homes around the world.

He began setting up as soon as it arrived, enlisting the help of friends and family to turn the shipping container into a functioning home.

Zackary, from the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, now rents the container to tenants whilst he works on renovating the rest of the property.

His videos have received millions of views on TikTok, sparking debate about methods to deal with overpopulation, homelessness, and housing crises.

Zackary is thrilled with his unique property and hopes to inspire others to think outside the box when it comes to real estate.

He said: “I bought the one-acre property with the intention of having a granny flat.

“After extensive research online, I came across these portable container homes and decided I might as well give it a go.

“I thought to myself ‘Why not? It could turn out to be a great investment!’ So I took the plunge.”

After extensive research and months of back-and-forth with suppliers in China, Zackary was offered a quote he couldn’t refuse.

He said: “They offered me a very secure payment option so that made me feel a little bit more at ease.

“I chatted with lots of different suppliers who gave me many different quotes, so it was a relief to get it sorted.

“I expected that I would have to do a few things to get it up to scratch but I was quite surprised with the overall size, quality, and ease of installation!”

Initially, Zackary just uploaded videos of his renovation to YouTube. He decided to check out TikTok and was positively surprised by the result.

He said: “I started to vlog all the renovation as I have very big plans ahead.

“I wanted my daughter to be able to look back on these videos and see everything that we have completed.

“Once I put the video on TikTok, my comments were filled with people who were positively surprised at how easy and cheap this type of accommodation can be.

“My first video is now close to 30,000,000 views!

“I think that this type of portable container home could solve the housing crisis and homelessness, so I’m glad to have inspired people to talk about it.

“This could accommodate low-income earners and fit into small spaces.

“I think investors should also look into it. I've started renting the container and it’s paid for itself!

“I’m so glad I took a chance - it’s definitely paid off!”
