This distraught Ukrainian girl cries for her mom after fleeing her war-stricken home for safety at the Hungarian border.

Dressed in pink boots with a pacifier hanging around her neck, she sits alongside her two siblings inside Zahony station on the Hungarian border.

The youngsters were waiting with their mom for a train to take them onwards to Hungary’s capital city Budapest.

A team of young aid workers provided food, drinks and clothing for families arriving at the typically quiet railway station that has three ticket counters.

Richard Gripp, 19, a volunteer who recently finished school, said: ‘There were thousands of people here overnight, it was like a nightclub.

“Now it’s more quiet as we’re waiting for the next train.”

Hungary’s border crossings, which have seen around 90,000 refugees, are markedly quieter than neighboring Poland and Slovakia.

Many families arriving at Zahony station - the country’s main crossing point - were immediately transferred onto trains to Budapest for onward travel.

In Beregsurany, around an hour away, local police did not allow journalists to approach the crossing point where a coach was picking up a handful of waiting families.

At a nearby refugee help center, some 30 people received blankets and drinks from a single tent manned by aid workers.
