Harrowing pictures show tearful Ukrainians on a packed train as they make the 14 hour journey out of their war-torn country.

The images show passengers traveling from Lviv, Ukraine to Przemysl, Poland.

Passengers sat and slept in the crowded train aisles for the 14-hour journey in a desperate bid to reach safety, on Sunday, March 13.

One passenger is Anna Butenko, 26, who was planning to go and stay with her sister in Prague.

From Dnipro, Ukraine, her father, a firefighter, and boyfriend, in the army, stayed behind.

Other passengers include Julia Rznickaya and her mother Larissa, from Kharkiv.

The family left behind a father at home and were going to Poland to an as yet unknown location.

More than 2.5 million Ukrainians have fled to neighboring countries since the war started on February 24, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

More than 1.5 million of those have fled to Poland.
