A dog transport company is helping to feed pooches in war torn Ukraine – after collecting nearly 5,000 kg ( 11,000 lb) worth of dog food.

Daisybrook International Pet Transport is collecting dog food donations from around the UK and has been inundated with 300 bags.

The firm, based in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, has already dropped off 190 bags to a contact in Germany who has it picked up and delivered to the Polish border.

Owner Matthew Hunt, 52, drove their specialized dog van, crammed to the roof with food, to Germany on Tuesday, March 15, and plans to make the trip once a week.

Transport manager Charlotte Carpenter, 28, said her house is stacked with the bags of food and hopes it will help raise awareness of the plight of pooches in Ukraine.

The company, which collects show dogs for buyers across Europe, has also delivered boxes of collars, leashes, coats, beds and toys, as well as cat food.

Charlotte said: “We had a friend in Germany who knew someone who could come and collect the food from Poland and take it back to the border.

“The response has been amazing, we have had 300 bags of 15kg food donated to us already.

“People have been so generous.

“Matt has taken the first lot of food out to Germany, about 190 bags, and that has now researched Ukraine.

“With the business we are over in Europe once a week so we can continue to take food out.

“It’s blown up and gone a bit mental, we have people from all over the country making donations to us and it has continued to snowball.

“We have had to halt donations just now until we can get more of the food over to Germany – we are running out of space to store it all.

“There is still endless sachets, tins and treats to get over there.

“We are just keeping the bags of food at our house, in the bathroom, the dining room – there isn’t much room left.

“People love dogs, and we want to do as much as we can to help the ones in need in Ukraine.

“We want to raise more awareness about the dogs that need rescued because people are having to flee their homes and can’t take their dogs with them.

“It’s a terrible situation where people with multiple dogs are having to choose which ones to take.”
