A hero teacher saved a pupil's life by performing the Heimlich maneuver in the classroom - after he choked on a bottle cap.

Janiece Jenkins, 56, has been hailed by staff and parents alike at East Orange Community Charter School in New Jersey for her quick thinking.

She sprang into action after third-grader Robert Stonaker, 9, was unable to open a water bottle in his math class.

He then tried to use his mouth - resulting in him choking on the bottle cap.

CCTV footage from the classroom shows Robert starting to panic as the lid gets stuck in his throat.

At first, he attempts to dislodge it himself by running to the sink and coughing it up, but he quickly realizes he needs the help of his teacher.

Ms. Jenkins immediately performs the life-saving maneuver on Robert - who then coughs up the object.

After the cap was removed, Robert can be seen shouting in the video: “It’s out! It’s out! It’s out!"

Ms. Jenkins, from East Orange, New Jersey, said: “He was pointing to his neck and he was all flustered.

"He can’t talk so then I just turn him around, perform the Heimlich maneuver and here we are.

"Once he was OK and I made sure there was nothing in his mouth, it took a second, I breathed, I looked around my classroom, looked at my students and I was like, ‘OK’."

The incident happened on April 6.
