A rare signed copy of Roald Dahl's "The BFG" given to a girl by her friend who inspired the famous book is up for auction.

Dahl signed the book as a present from his granddaughter Sophie Dahl to her best mate Daisy Thomson.

It is inscribed "HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAISY, ROALD DAHL,1982" and with the same pen in large letters and a juvenile hand, "SOPHIE TO DAISY."

Dahl named the character in the kids' classic after his granddaughter Sophie.

The book is on sale at Dominic Winter Auctioneers and is expected to fetch hundreds.

It is described as "a rare, special double-signed presentation copy" of the renowned story.

Chris Albury, auctioneer said: "Roald Dahl's daughter, Tessa Dahl, was a close friend of Daisy Thomson's mother.

"Tessa's daughter, Sophie (Roald's grand-daughter) - the inspiration for the BFG's heroine - would often go to Daisy's house for tea and to play.

"The vendor, Daisy Thomson, was given the book on her 5th birthday, which was signed for her by both the young Sophie and her grandfather Roald Dahl."
