The mid-air scenes were captured by bird photographer Tuan Vo in San Diego, California as the birds of prey defended their nested chicks.

He explains: “When they start having chicks, the demand for food increases and the male has to work really hard to bring food home for the female to feed the babies.

“During this time, babies are vulnerable to be attacked by crows or other predators since they are not capable of defending themselves.

“Along the cliff of the beach, pelicans can be seen flying by the falcon’s nest and, in order to protect the falcon babies, the fierce female falcon would chase and attack the pelican, because it thought this big bird as predators.

"Most of the time the pelicans get away. Although, one time I saw a falcon grab the tail of a pelican, and it fell to the beach and died."
