A couple were stunned to find an extremely rare PINK grasshopper while cleaning their garage.

The insect - no bigger than a thumbnail - was spotted taking refuge on a car bumper before springing to a wall.

Antony and Samantha Read, both 50, said they'd never seen a pink grasshopper before.

The radiant insects are extremely rare, with experts saying there is a 1% chance of seeing one during a person's lifetime.

The couple spotted the insect at their home in West Raynham, near Fakenham, England.

Samantha Read, a beauty therapist, said: "We've been in Norfolk for six years and never seen so many different bugs.

"It was only about the size of a thumbnail.

"My husband is really interested in insects so he took a picture. It was only when he zoomed in that he noticed the color."

Pink grasshoppers are affected by a genetic mutation known as erythrism, which causes a reddish discoloration due to the overproduction of certain pigments.

The brightly colored insects do not survive for long in the wild as they are easily spotted by predators
