One of Tiger Woods' 'backup' putters is up for sale - with bids already topping a whopping $248,875 (£215k).

The Scotty Cameron - reportedly kept by the golf superstar in case his first-choice broke - is being auctioned online.

The Newport 2 model - believed to be from 2005 and signed by Tiger - is being sold by Golden Age Auctions.

Bids had reached $248,922 (£216,473) at the time of writing, with the sale closing on September 18.

Although Tiger's clubs have previously sold for millions, it's expected this putter will stay in the six-figure range.

"Here it is - perhaps the single most iconic piece of modern golf memorabilia - Tiger Woods' personal red dot Scotty Cameron backup putter," the lot said.

"The offered putter is what's famously known as a Tiger Woods 'backup' - a putter produced [...] should a backup need to be called into duty.

"Since only a small handful of Tiger Woods Scotty Cameron backup putters were ever produced, even fewer have left Tiger's orbit and reached the collector market.

"When it comes to Tiger Woods backup putters, the dream is to somehow put that putter into Tiger Woods' hands - almost always an impossible feat.

"Well, we know that the offered putter was handled by Tiger Woods himself - as Tiger beautifully autographed the face.

"Then, on October 1, 2005, Tiger auctioned this putter at a fundraiser called The Tiger Woods Learning Center Block Party."

Engraved with a T.W.on the front and Tiger Woods on the back, the putter is said to be identical to the model the icon used to win 14 of his 15 major titles.

It comes with a certificate of authenticity from maker Scotty Cameron and could be seen as sound investment, the auction company said.

A set of irons purportedly used by Tiger Woods during his famous "Tiger Slam" in 2000 and 2001 sold for over $5 million (£4.3 million) earlier this year.
