An amateur golfer has defied the odds of around 10 billion to one to bag four holes in one - in a single year.

Hugh Barrett, 63, has even been praised by the son of his sporting icon Seve Ballesteros for his incredible feat.

The odds of hitting a single hole in one are 12,500, while landing four is estimated to be around 10 billion to one.

Hugh, of Leeds, West Yorks., England scored hole-in-ones in January, May and September before his fourth on Saturday, October 1, at Headingley Golf Club.

And amazingly, it takes his lifetime total hole-in-ones to a staggering seven, having sank his first in the 1970s as a teenager.

Hugh, a father of three, said: "I couldn’t see it go in because the tee is higher than the green and you can’t quite see the bottom of the hole.

“As I walked off the tee and walked down, I had a feeling, a sixth sense really, that it had gone in.

“It was surreal, when I think about it now it was an unbelievable feeling.

"I thought ‘wow, this can’t be happening.”

Hugh idolized golfing legend Seve Ballesteros memorabilia and often exchanges messages with his son Javier, a professional golfer, on social media.

And when he told him about his feat, Javier replied: “Hi Hugh! Wow, four holes in one, it’s a lot. I’ve had two, but on practice rounds.

"My dad had at least one in competition in La Moraleja, in Madrid. Not sure of more."

Hugh said: “Seve is my favorite sportsman of all time. It’s fantastic and just adds to the storyline I think.”

The world record is 51, held by retired Texan pro-Mancil Davis.
