An elderly couple in a relationship for 42 years have finally married in a nursing home - decades after she first popped the question.

Jim Hawkins, 81, finally said I do to his partner Lynne, 64.

The pair had lived on the same road in their hometown of Bourton-on-the Water, Glos, England, where they had their first date in 1980.

Now in a nursing home due to his battles with dementia, Jim finally agreed to tie the knot - saying “I’m ready, and I’m getting on a bit!”

He had previously rejected a proposal by Lynne early on in their relationship and the pair never married, though they raised their son James together in Fairview, Cheltenham.

Their wedding was described as a small ceremony followed by a celebration party at the home - to the delight of staff.

The catering team at The Orders of St John Care Trust Grevill House, Cheltenham, Glos, England even made their own wedding cake for the occasion.

Lynne, who is currently battling with cancer, said “It means the world to us both to finally be married for our remaining time together."

When asked the secret to their long relationship, she said it was "friendship, through thick and thin?"

Su Heller, Home Manager, said: “It has been an absolute privilege to support Lynne and Jim with the plans for their wedding day. Everyone here at OSJCT Grevill House is thrilled to see

This declaration of their love and affection for each other. Even in the later stage in life, love and romance can thrive.”

They married earlier this month.
