A high-flying photographer has taken a look back at the heady days of summer with a stunning series of aerial pictures of New York's famous Coney Island.

Jeffrey Milstein shuns drones to hang out the side of helicopters with high-resolution cameras for his projects.

The New Yorker said his new collection was shot at the tourist spot "on one of the very hot days in August."

The images show traditional seaside rides and amusements, as well as thousands of beach-goers enjoying the day.

"I have always had an interest in amusement parks, and in particular a fascination with Coney Island," Jeffrey said.

The photographer uses a special stabilizer on his camera to counter the judder from the helicopter, and shoots in very high resolution to enable his pictures to appear in galleries.

His work is in many collections public and private including Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Museum, Washington DC, the George Eastman House, The Portland Art Museum, and the Akron Art Museum.

Coney Island is a peninsular neighborhood and entertainment area in the southwestern section of the New York City borough of Brooklyn.

By the mid-19th century it had become a seaside resort, and by the late 19th century, amusement parks had also been built at the location.

The attractions reached a historical peak during the first half of the 20th century. However, they declined in popularity after World War II and, following years of neglect, several structures were torn down.

The area was revitalized with the opening of MCU Park baseball stadium in 2001 and several amusement rides starting in the 2010s.
