A family broke down in tears when an ex-foster child asked if they would 'adopt' him after they bonded - when he sold them a car.

Video shows the Wilkinsons reacting tearfully to Davon Woods' recorded message asking them to become his 'forever family' and whether he could take their last name.

Davon, 27, who grew up in the foster care system, first met the Wilkinson family at a car dealership in Savannah, Georgia, in April 2021.

He sold Sarah Wilkinson, 30, a car at a discount, and bonded with the family during the process.

After hearing Davon's story, Sarah and her parents kept in touch with him and, what started as a random encounter, blossomed into a loving relationship.

The Wilkinsons invited Davon for dinner on his birthday in August 2021, and to join them again for Thanksgiving later that year.

Although no legal adoption process has taken place, the Wilkinsons now treat Davon like family - and allowed him to use their last name.

Davon, from Statesboro, Georgia, said: "It was weird to be in a loving environment. I've never had a relationship with any parents ever, adoptive or biological."

In August 2022, more than a year after their first encounter, Davon asked to become part of the family and to change his last name to Wilkinson.

Davon added: "I just wanted to make sure I was part of the family. I wanted to show my appreciation for all they'd done.

"It was something I'd always wanted. I've always wanted to say 'this is my family.'

"When I went out with them it was a very unfamiliar situation, but I still felt the love every time.

"When you go without love for a long time and are presented with it, it's weird. It feels like you're starting a new job.

"They were full of joy when I asked them. They got very emotional."

Davon has since quit his job and founded Foster Kids Matter, an organization dedicated to serving foster children in Georgia.

"I was inspired to become an advocate for foster kids. If I hadn't had that experience I would never have done it."
