A gun in peanut butter and a hand grenade have made the top ten list of most unusual items found at U.S. security checkpoints in 2022.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) staff are tasked with ensuring the safety of travel, but what they find would make passengers' toes curl.

Lethal items include guns hidden inside places such as a raw chicken, a medical sling and a PlayStation.

While smuggling of illicit substances has seen fentanyl deposited in a Skittles packet and drugs secreted in hair scrunches.

Elsewhere, someone put a knife inside a laptop and another stuffed "soiled money" into a pair of crutches.

Luckily, a hand grenade found inside a carry-on bag at Milwaukee Mitchell Airport was discovered to be inert - but only after the Sheriff’s Department’s bomb squad was called to the scene.

TSA said: "Shout out to our TSA officers nationwide for protecting the traveling public."
