SEE IT: Earthquake devastation in Turkish city of Adana

Two earthquakes have killed more than 5,200 people and left a trail of destruction across a wide area of southern Turkey and neighboring Syria.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has declared a state of emergency in 10 provinces.

On Monday a magnitude 7.8 quake, was followed hours later by a second one almost as powerful.

Thousands of buildings collapsed, including hospitals, schools and apartment blocks. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue efforts are hindered by severe winter weather.
