White House replica goes on sale for $38.9M

A replica of the White House has gone on sale.

The presidential Hillsborough, Californian property, dubbed the "Western White House," has hit the market for $38.9m (£30.8m).

The 24,350-square-foot residence offers 11 bedrooms and 14 bathrooms.

Set on almost three acres, it comes with both a replica Oval Office and an "East Room'" event and reception space.

Former owner George R. Hearst, son of newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst, commissioned famed architect Julia Morgan in 1930 to remodel it into an architectural representation of the real presidential building in Washington D.C..

The current owners have refreshed the interiors with new fixtures and appliances to retain the original architectural detail while bringing the home into the 21st century.

The property boasts an entry parlor, two powder rooms, formal dining room, gourmet kitchen, butler’s pantry, breakfast room, and family and fitness rooms.

Its four levels are accessed by a cascading main staircase, a secondary stairwell and an elevator.

Outside sees mature trees, terraces, rose gardens, marble hardscaping, recently refinished swimming pool with hot tub, and pool pavilion with sauna/bath and full kitchen.

Alex Buljan, of real estate agency Compass, explained: "This property is a historic jewel for the town of Hillsborough, and I think it’s really important to make the history as well known as possible.

"I love “going down the rabbit hole” into these historic properties. Properties like this are a lot of fun to bring to market."
