SEE IT: Vermont and New York hit with flash floods

At least one person has died in Vermont after widespread flooding hit the region.

The sudden and torrential downpours hit Vermont and New York State with eight inches of rain causing intense flash floods.

Most of the northeast has been deluged by heavy rainfall with Vermont and New York taking the brunt of the damage.

A video from Hartford, Vermont shows the Ottauquechee River overflowing with a dangerous current.

Drone footage from Ludlow shows the scale of the flooding where homes and vehicles have been submerged by the floods.

Vermont Governor Phil Scott compared the floods to Hurricane Irene.

In a press conference, he said: "What’s different for me is that Irene lasted about 24 hours.

“We’re getting just as much rain, if not more, and it’s going on for days. That’s my concern. It’s not just the initial damage.”

Footage from New York shows similar scenes with homes and roads being hit with deep and fast-flowing water in Woodbury and Highland Falls.

The Hudson Valley was the most affected area with at least eight inches of rain.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for Orange County and Ontario County.

The National Weather Service released a statement that read: "A slow moving storm system containing instances of heavy rain has impacted much of New England today, particularly in Vermont, with several instances of severe flooding.

"The low pressure system and anomalous atmospheric moisture content associated with the ongoing heavy rain event is forecast to slide northeastward tonight and eventually exit the region on Tuesday.

"Before then however, additional slow moving showers capable of containing intense rainfall rates are expected to dump a few additional inches of rainfall over parts of northern Vermont and far northeast New York.

"As a result, dangerous flooding in these areas are forecast to continue or worsen throughout the night, with impacts turning from flash flooding to main-stem river flooding."
