SOUND ON: Scammer realizes he picked the wrong victim – the police

This is the moment a hapless scammer realized they had picked the wrong victim - the POLICE.

A man can be heard telling a car accident sob story to his "grandpa" in an audio clip released by the Scottsdale Police Department in Arizona.

Unfortunately for him, the person at the other end of the phone is Sergeant Vince Lewis - who is wise to the scam.

The officer listens to the tale before saying: "When you first called, did you hear how I answered it? Scottsdale Police Department."

The scammer then immediately hangs up.

Scottsdale Police Department said on Facebook: "This scammer didn't know what he was getting into when he dialed his next 'victim.'

"Sgt. Lewis asked the caller to give him a moment to grab a pen and paper, started recording and the rest can be heard here.

"So many red flags: doesn't identify himself; causes panic; gives name/number to sound legitimate; creates urgency; cash bail (sometimes they will ask for gift cards/ instant payment app/green dot cards); keep it a secret.

"Do yourself a favor, avoid these calls! Hang up ASAP if you start hearing anything that sounds like this one. Better yet, don't answer calls from someone you don't know."
