Library staff have been left shocked after an overdue book was returned - nearly 45 years after it was borrowed.

The "Great Prime Ministers" book by John Whittle was taken out on June 30, 1979, from Manningtree Library in Manningtree, Essex but wasn't ever returned.

However, staff were left 'surprised' after the book was returned last week by the relatives of the person who had previously borrowed it.

Current PM Rishi Sunak wasn't even born when the book was borrowed and the UK has had ten different premiers since it was taken out.

An Essex Library Service spokesperson said the book was in 'surprisingly good condition' when it was returned.

They said: "Staff at Manningtree Library were pleasantly surprised when this title was returned.

"Despite it being more than four decades overdue, the book was in surprisingly good condition and the customer was encouraged to rejoin and use the library again.

"Our libraries have changed significantly since this item was first borrowed.

"We now offer everything from e-books and computer facilities to meeting rooms, events and activities for all ages."

The library have decided not to fine the person who borrowed the book, but the maximum fine you can get is capped at £8.75 per overdue item.
