A litter of puppies found abandoned in a shoe box were reunited with their mother in a rescue center 'miracle'.

The seven dumped puppies, believed to be two weeks old, were found in a shoe box outside the Braintree Council office and handed over to Danaher Animal Home in Wethersfield, Essex.

The dogs, thought to be a Jack Russell and Terrier Cross, had to be hand-reared by the rescue's general manager Sam Garvey.

Not long after the puppies were handed into the rescue, a dog warden found their mom who had also been abandoned nearby.

Sam said: “I had to feed the puppies every few hours and thankfully they’ve been doing well and continue to get stronger and stronger.”

“Then, something special happened.

“A local dog warden brought in a dog who’d been found abandoned nearby and she appeared to be the puppies’ mum. It was like a miracle.

“Sadly, she wasn’t in a good condition, she was very scruffy and skinny.

"We tried to gently introduce her to the puppies and, although she was happy to see them, they didn’t form the bond we’d all hoped for.”

The mom, named Samantha after the general manager, is a gentle and loving dog who has since settled in a new home.

The puppies are now continuing to grow and play, with Danaher saying they believe all the dogs involved are now in the best place they can be.

They have been named after the popular sitcom 'Friends' characters: Rachel, Ross, Monica, Chandler, Phoebe, Joey and Gunther.

Sam added: "The puppies continue to grow and are becoming cheeky, playful dogs in our care.

“They’re not ready for rehoming yet and we’ll put their profiles on our website as soon as they’re up for adoption.

“We’re so incredibly happy that all the puppies are doing really well and have survived this crucial time where they should have been with their mum.”

Danaher Animal Home has launched a fundraiser for the cost of milk and vet bills for the puppies called 'Pound for a Pup'. You can donate here.
