A hypercar has become the world’s fastest electric vehicle after hitting 272.61 mph (438.73 kph).

The Aspark OWL SP600 achieved the record at the Automotive Testing Papenburg (ATP) track in Germany on Saturday (June 8).

It took the record from the Rimac Nevera, which clocked a 258 mph (415 kph) top speed in November 2022.

Masanori Yoshida, CEO of Osaka-based Aspark, says: "It has been about 10 years since we started working on the OWL Hypercar.

"We aimed for the World’s fastest accelerating car, then attempted and achieved the top speed world records today with our new hypercar OWL SP600.

"This technical capability inspires all involved to personal excellence and to challenge and grow in leaps and bounds into the future."

Aspark commissioned Italy's Manifattura Automobili Torino (M.A.T.) for the development and production of a hypercar able to break the world top speed record for EVs.

Professional driver and Nurburgring 24h winner Marc Basseng broke the record on his second attempt on Saturday. Aspark says it was measured using the certified Racelogic V-Box, a high-precision GPS-based measurement device provided by the ATP proving ground in Papenburg.

Aspark previously set the record for the fastest electric production car May 2023 by reaching 198 mph (318.65 kph) with their £2.2m Aspark Owl hypercar.
