A polar bear was caught peering in on holiday-goers in the middle of the night.

Sigurd Berger Bekkelund, 23, was on a weekend trip to Svalbard, a group of islands north of Norway, in April when he heard a bump in the night.

Sigurd and his friend were staying in a remote cabin on the island of Agardh and were lucky enough to be awake at 1:45 am when the bear approached.

The video shows the polar bear sniffing around the cabin's window, mere meters away from those inside.

Sigurd, an electrician from Norway, said: "This was the first time I have seen a polar bear at close range like this, so I enjoyed every second of it.

"Some polar bears on this island could potentially be aggressive and want to break in, which could have ended badly for the bear.

"We brought a rifle for self-protection so we felt safe from that."

Before approaching the cabin, the polar bear took a big bite off Sigurd's snowmobile seat.

Sigurd said: "The polar bear stayed around for maybe two minutes until we decided to scare it away with a flare gun.

"We opened the door on the opposite side of the bear and fired a flare gun with a little explosion far up in the air.

"This luckily scared the bear and caused it to run 50-60 meters away."
