An astronaut has captured jaw-dropping views of Earth's city lights and aurora.

American spaceman Don Pettit used long exposure camera techniques to shoot from 257 miles up on the International Space Station.

The Expedition 72 Flight Engineer's 24 October pictures saw him train his lens on Lake Michigan and northern Mexico.

NASA Johnson said: "Don Pettit captured this long-exposure photograph of city lights streaking across Earth while a green and red aurora moved through the atmosphere."
