Photographer Paul Goldstein has won the Black and White category in the Nature Photographer of the Year 2024 competition.

His dramatic image - entitled 'A Cross to Bear' - captures wildebeest crossing the Talek River in Kenya's Maasai Mara.

He said: "There are almost 24,000 entries in this large and established competition and I was thrilled the judges recognized the old-fashioned virtues of patience, anticipation and imagination.

"It was early for wildebeest to be close to the water, although this was the Talek river not the much busier Mara one. I was surprised they came that close but once one or two have drunk and feel the cool flow on their shins the herd mentality kicks in.

A wildlife photographer has captured stunning pictures of three young tigers having a day by the pool. British guide Paul Goldstein observed the predators as they lounged by the water in India's Bandhavgarh National Park. "Tigers are not reliable predators unlike their more available cat cousins in Africa. But guiding people, particularly new guests, to see these remarkable cats, is massively rewarding, whatever the frustrations. Two hours by ourselves with three yearlings was pretty close to faunal nirvana in perfect light in the far buffer zone of the park. It was a gamble to drive there with a 4am start, but if these things were easy they would lose their allure."

"Slow shutter speeds are my jam and I was wanting to achieve a painting feel to the image. Very few of them work and these effects cannot be created after the event even with a lot of sorcery (cheating).

"Fortunately one ruminant still giving some perspective to this feverish activity that has continued for millennia. Well-known scenarios and behaviors need a new rendition, 'gnu light through old windows', if you like."

The Nature Photographer of the Year 2024 winners were announced on Saturday (Dec. 14).
