A photographer has captured a rare picture of a once-in-a-160,000-year comet from the UK.

Josh Dury, 27, snapped the cosmic wonder from Severn Beach in Bristol on Wednesday (Jan. 15) evening.

He said: "Today’s weather made this an immense challenge with The Mendips, Bristol and Wales being clouded out. Only a clearing before the M4 made it possible - making this a once-in-a-lifetime snap.

"Called C/2024 G3 (ATLAS), this is a 160,000-year comet and this is probably one of the first handful of images photographed from the UK."

Potentially the brightest of 2025, the comet was discovered by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) survey in Chile on 5 April 2024. At the time it was about 4.38 AU (655 million km) from Earth.
