The mystery of disturbing messages spotted in Los Angeles may have been solved.

Internet users have been shocked by the discovery of large words visible on Google Maps which include 'HELP', 'LAPD', 'FEDERAL', and 'TRAFICO'.

Spelled out using construction materials and debris, they are visible in an undeveloped lot, and sprayed on a sidewalk and a billboard.

Their location next to a Union Pacific railroad yard led to the theory they could be connected to human trafficking and are a desperate cry for help.

However, LA police have broken their silence on who they believe is responsible.

LAPD Central Division responded to a web sleuth on X who suggested a man named Jose was writing all the signs.

They wrote: "We’ve had several different contacts with the individual you speak of. He has refused housing or a mental health evaluation. There is no evidence of Human Trafficking. He has been at the location for a few years."

It seemed likely law enforcement had been aware of the messages, as one Google Street View scene shows a Los Angeles County Sheriff's vehicle passing the billboard with words daubed on it that include 'HELP' and 'FBI'.
