A dog has given birth to what could be a world record-tying litter - of 11 puppies.

Mollie, a three-year-old Dachshund from Fordham in Cambs, bore the huge brood at home three weeks ago.

Another Dachshund Winnie made national news when she gave birth to 11 puppies near Leicester in September 2023.

Mollie's owner Ian Rampley said it had been expected Mollie might have four or six babies - but by the time the eighth had popped out they knew they were in for a shock.'

Rampley said: "Mollie has been really good and coped well.

"After the first two she got used to it and sailed away from then on.

"This is her first litter. They just kept coming. I turned into James Herriot from start to finish."

Seven of the puppies are black and tan, just like their mum, while four are brown and two of those will be registered as red, which is rare for the breed.

Rampley admitted he would probably keep some of the brood and find good homes for the others.

The average number of puppies in a dachshund litter is between one and six, due to their small size.

It's understood Guinness World Records does not keep records for individual dog breeds.

However, the largest litter of puppies ever is 24 born on November 29, 2004 to Tia, a Neapolitan mastiff, in the UK.
