An expert reveals the hidden meanings behind emojis that parents should look out for - including the cat face, dynamite and chair emoji.

Keith Broni, 35, reveals the images that parents should watch out for following the release of the hit Netflix series "Adolescence".

The series highlighted how children can be radicalized online by misogynistic content.

The editor-in-chief of Emojipedia, the emoji search engine, said that people have been using emojis for secret meanings for over a decade.

Keith said that emojis relating to the 'manosphere' - a collection of influencers who push sexist ideas to young men online - include the red pill, kidney beans, and the coffee emoji.

Keith, from Dublin, Ireland, said: "This is not new, this emoji resurfacing has been happening for at least 10 years when the emoji keyboard was used on keyboards.

"It’s just revolving. Every demographic group has their own slang, and they want to put itself in contrast with the generation before them.

"I have heard of incel language before, and I’ve been chronically online for better or for worse, and I had heard of the “manosphere" before, and over the years, I have encountered various other ways emojis can be used differently.

"For instance, the red heart is a default and a positive reaction, but some people are now saying that it is now linked with MAGA.

"A white heart can be used when someone has passed away, and the colour of the heart can match things in real life like the green heart representing your love for St Patrick's Day."

Keith said that even some of the most generic emojis can have a negative connotation toward women.

For example, the coffee emoji can be used when people express disapproval of a woman's actions.

Keith said: "The use of the pill emoji to reference red pilling, which is a term that has happened well over a decade, is nothing new, and there are emojis to counter that.

"The 100 emoji refers to the belief that 80% of women are attracted to 20% of men, but that’s not to say you see the 100 emoji for that meaning.

"Their interests are constantly changing, their slang is changing, and their emoji usage is changing. This show exposes the emojis used by young people who use these emojis instead of using the outright terms.

"Every demographic group has their own slang, and they want to put itself in contrast with the generation before them."

Keith said that parents need to monitor their children's emoji usage and educate themselves on the different meanings.

He added that it is "impossible" for parents to stop their children from using emoji for different meanings.

Keith said: "I would say there is very little they can do to prevent this, but I think parents need to be aware of what an emoji can mean.

"It’s impossible to stop this. You can’t stop people from making new words and stop them from taking words and creating new meanings.

"You can increasingly become paranoid to believe every emoji has a connotation.

"For instance, if you see a firecracker emoji on its own, you would be like, 'What does that mean?' it's just a firecracker."

🔴 Red Pill – “I see the truth.” It is used in toxic male spaces to mean waking up to supposed hidden ‘truths’ about women and society, often linked to misogynistic ideologies.

🔵 Blue Pill – Represents those who are “blind to the truth” or still believe in mainstream views about relationships and gender dynamics.

💥 Dynamite Emoji – An “exploding red pill,” meaning someone is a radicalized incel.

🫘 Kidney Bean – A symbol linked to incel culture, sometimes mocking women.

💯 100 Emoji – Tied to the “80/20 rule,” the belief that 80% of women are only attracted to 20% of men.
