A rare "one-in-a-billion" spherical egg has fetched hundreds of pounds at auction.

Egg processor Ali Greene was working a shift when she saw one "moving differently" on the conveyor belt.

Ali, who works for Fenton Farm Eggs in Devon, discovered that the chances to find a round egg are "one in a billion."

After doing some research she learned that in the past a round egg was sold for $258.

She then decided to auction the egg at Bearnes Hampton Littlewood Auctioneers in Exeter on March 18 - which was sold for $542.

All the proceeds are going to the Devon Rape Crisis charity.

Bearnes Hampton and Littlewood Auctioneers shared the sale on social media saying: "Surpassing all 'egg-speciations', buyers were scrambling to bid for this rare 'one in a billion' spherical hen's egg, which eventually went under the hammer (not literally) for a smashing £420!

"Sold to raise funds for a local Devon Charity, Devon Rape Crisis, the vendor was egg-static' at the result."
