An incredible gallery of images by a photographer celebrates World Penguin Day today (April 25).

Guide and conservationist Paul Goldstein says he has seen literally millions of penguins over the last 25 years, from the vast colonies of Kings on South Georgia, to Adelies, Gentoos and Chinstraps clinging to cobalt-blue icebergs and porpoising across the savage South Atlantic.

He says: "I never tire of watching these, the most streamline of all creatures or indeed objects, man-made or otherwise. However, on World Penguin Day I want to share some penguin royalty: the Emperor.

"These are fiendishly hard to find as they are deep in the Weddell Sea and Eastern Peninsula of Antarctica, but they are enormously impressive being the most colourful and the largest.

"Whether it is a pair gliding over the ice or raising chicks their pristine icy strongholds, only accessible by helicopters, any emperor is a good emperor.

"Sensitivity is the watchword in these parts of the planet; sadly the rapacious appetites of venal fishing vessels don't have the same degree of concern and if the food stocks fall too much more we could find all penguin numbers seriously compromised; a sobering thought on 'their' day."
