The Sun appears to be grinning as temperatures are set to rocket in the UK.

A mini-heatwave is expected this week, with temperatures rising to 29°C in London by Thursday, and a vast dark spot on our star could be mistaken for a big grin.

The Sun's activity was observed by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) spacecraft on Monday, June 16.

The observed coronal hole could be as wide as 800,000 km and indicates regions where the Sun's magnetic field lines open out into space, allowing solar wind to escape more easily.

The upcoming warmer and sunnier weather will build from midweek onward due to high pressure from the Azores.
