James Webb marks anniversary with Cat’s Paw Nebula image

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has celebrated its third anniversary of scientific operations with a dazzling new image of the Cat’s Paw Nebula.

The picture reveals never-before-seen details inside the turbulent star-forming region nearly 4,000 light-years away in the constellation Scorpius.

Using its powerful near-infrared camera, Webb peered into a single “toe bean” of the nebula, uncovering clusters of gas, dust, and young stars shaping their cosmic environment.

The JWST is a collaboration between, and flagship space observatory of, NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), launched to explore the universe in unprecedented detail using infrared light.

It orbits the Sun at the Lagrange Point 2 (L2), about 1.5 million kilometers from Earth, which provides a stable environment for deep-space observations.

Shawn Domagal-Goldman, acting director of the Astrophysics Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington, said: "Three years into its mission, Webb continues to deliver on its design – revealing previously hidden aspects of the universe, from the star formation process to some of the earliest galaxies.

"As it repeatedly breaks its own records, Webb is also uncovering unknowns for new generations of flagship missions to tackle. Whether it’s following up on the mysteries of dark matter with NASA’s nearly complete Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, or narrowing our search for life to Earth-like planets with the Habitable Worlds Observatory, the questions Webb has raised are just as exciting as the answers it’s giving us."

The European Space Agency said: "Webb continued to return on its ambitious science goals over its third year of operations."
