A startling satellite image shows the extensive wildfires affecting Portugal.

As of July 29, 2025, Portugal is impacted by major fires in the north and center of the country, with more than 2,000 firefighters mobilized to battle the flames.

The most affected areas are Arouca (Aveiro District), Ponte da Barca (Viana do Castelo District), and Penamacor (Castelo Branco District).

This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellites on July 29, shows the large smoke cloud generated by the wildfires in the Arouca area, along with a second plume of smoke rising from the Ponte de Barca wildfires.

Copernicus satellite data provides important information for fire prevention and preparedness, supporting the development of early warning systems, fire risk and damage assessments.
