The mysterious space rock suggested to be a hostile alien spaceship was due to make its closest approach to Earth today (Dec 19).

The rare interstellar visitor, designated Comet 3I/ATLAS, was predicted to pass at a safe distance of about 170 million miles.

Detected earlier in 2025 by the ATLAS survey in Hawaii, the object is the size of Manhattan and has been confirmed as originating from another star system.

The comet has ignited controversial theories, with Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb theorising it could be an artificial alien probe on a reconnaissance mission, due to its unusual glow, trajectory aligning with planetary orbits, and non-natural path.

A scientific paper co-authored by Loeb had warned the object could be a hostile spacecraft for which humanity should be prepared.

It read: “The consequences, should the hypothesis turn out to be correct, could potentially be dire for humanity, and would possibly require defensive measures to be undertaken (though these might prove futile).”

Mainstream scientists from NASA and the ESA have dismissed such ideas, finding no signs of propulsion, structure, or signals, attributing traits to typical cometary behaviour.

The event remains a spectacular reminder of cosmic mysteries, viewable with binoculars before fading from sight and leaving our solar system.
