Stunning pictures show a heart-shaped lake in one of the United Kingdom's most loved beauty spots, formed out of a slate quarry.

Pretty drone images show the romantic shape of Elterwater Quarry, in Cumbria, which is known to locals as 'the heart of the Lake District'.

It is believed the heart was formed after years of mining in the area, which dates back to the 19th century.

Its rich blue colour is said to be caused by ancient volcanic rock - which contains a high concentration of metals - which have been dissolved into the water.

In October last year, plans for an 'underground zip wire experience' around the cavern were approved.

It will soon see several steel staircases and platforms installed across the quarry’s cavern.

The ziplines will then take visitors from one platform to another.

The experience is said to allow people to see parts of the cavern that were previously inaccessible.
