Surprised homeowners woke up to find two owls sleeping in their house - after the birds fell down their chimney.

Surrey-based Wildlife Aid said they received a call earlier this week from a shocked person who found the tawny owls sleeping on their chandelier and clinging to the curtains.

The bird pair, which were discovered to be male and female, had somehow managed to fall down the home's chimney - granting them the nicknames Sooty and Sweep.

They were rescued by the charity and attended to by vets after getting superficial scratches to their eyes from the fall.

The damage they both suffered to their respective left eyes has since improved, and they have just been released back to the wild.

A spokesperson for Wildlife Aid said: "We had one very remarkable rescue, this week, when a pair of tawny owls came down somebody’s chimney.

"The homeowners woke up to quite the surprise - one tawny owl snoozing on their chandelier and the other hanging upside down from their curtains!

"Thankfully, they called Wildlife Aid and our rescuers did a fantastic job, safely collecting both owls. By popular public opinion, they have been aptly named Sooty & Sweep."
