Magazine containing ad to form The Rolling Stones up for auction

A rare copy of a magazine containing the first advert trying to form The Rolling Stones has been found and put at auction.

The edition of Jazz News has an ad placed by Brian Jones when he and Mick Jagger were looking to form the group.

Dated May 2, 1962, the advert reads: "Rhythm and blues guitarist and vocalist forming R&B band, require harmonica and / or tenor sax, piano, bass and drums. Must be keen to rehearse. Plenty of work available".

It is said to be ''hugely significant'' collector’s items for fans of the band and very few copies are known to exist.

Auctioneers says it is ''literally one of the earliest known origins of the band'.'

Another edition of the mag contains an editorial about Mick Jagger forming a group, and an advert for their first gig. Includes a great quote from Mick “I hope they don’t think we’re a rock n roll outfit.”

The magazines are set to fetch over $1,000 at Wessex Auction Rooms on February 27.

Auctioneer Martin Hughes said: “The magazines have come from a deceased estate which included a large collection for Jazz records, but also these magazines that were destined for the trash!

“Given how extremely rare these magazines are I am just so glad the sellers brought them to me first before disposing of them.

''The advert from Brian Jones, followed by the editorial about Mick Jagger forming a group, and the advert for the first gig is one of the most significant written records of The Rolling Stones' history that exists.

“Since the auction catalogue went live online last Friday, we have been inundated with enquiries from around the world, so I am expecting bidding to be strong.

“The combined lower estimate for the five lots is $1,000 but I wouldn’t be surprised to see it surpass that by some margin."
