A dust storm swept across Crete on April 1, 2026, blanketing the city of Heraklion in an orange haze and reducing visibility.

The phenomenon was part of wider disruption caused by Storm Erminio, which has brought severe weather to parts of Greece, including heavy rain, flooding and transport disruption.

Authorities have ordered school closures in several areas as the system moves across the country, with warnings over hazardous travel conditions and poor air quality.

Meteorologists say the storm is linked to a combination of intense rainfall and Saharan dust transport, a recurring seasonal pattern in the region.
