Hot air balloon festival floats on despite heatwaves

The festival comes after a streak of heatwaves that saw past 100 degrees.

An annual hot air balloon festival has revealed the parched state of Britain's landscape.

Bristol International Balloon Fiesta began today as thousands gathered to watch the launch.

Dozens of balloons lifted off the ground - but an aerial view showed the parched fields.

Fields of grass had turned from healthy green into a pale straw color as far as the eye could see, following heatwaves since June that saw the South West surpass 30C on multiple days.

But hot air balloon pilots will be thankful for this week's more moderate weather - as the festival has been delayed in past years due to rainfall, heavy wind, and soaring temperatures.

Balloons were initially launched at 6am but another batch will ascend at 6pm.

More takeoffs are expected over Saturday and Sunday, with over 100 balloons set to take to the skies - weather permitting.
