AC/DC guitarist Angus Young’s cap and tie from 1980 tour on sale

A school cap and tie worn by legendary AC/DC guitarist Angus Young is expected to fetch up to $8,010 at auction.

The "rare" clothing items were thought to have been worn by the iconic rocker while on stage during the Back In Black tour of England in 1980, according to auctioneers Ewbank's.

The cap is a deep green and has a cream 'A' for Angus embroidered on top.

It is thought to have been a gift from fans to Young.

The tie - made by Tootal - is green with red and golden stripes and has AC/DC crudely applied three times on it, thought to have been done by Young.

A label inside the cap is inscribed with handwritten messaging reading: 'To Angus from Martin + Maxine' along with an address and phone number from Belper near Derby.

A discussion on Facebook identifies Martin and Maxine as Martin Lewis and Maxine Roberts but provides no further information as to how Angus Young might have acquired the cap and tie.

AC/DC played the Odeon Birmingham on October 22 and 23, 1980 during their tour.

The vendor was related to the late, well-known roadie Keith Evans, who joined AC/DC around 1978 as Angus Young's guitar technician.

They gained access backstage after the 1980 Birmingham show through Evans, and it was then that band member Malcolm Young, brother of Angus, gave them the cap and tie.

The estimate is $5,340-$8,010 with bidding starting on August 26.

Ewbank's music specialist, John Silke, said: "This is a rare opportunity for fans to acquire such an iconic piece of stage-worn costume by one of the best-known and loved performers in the history of rock music."

Young settled on his signature schoolboy image very early in the band's career after experimenting with other costumes for live shows.

The uniform was inspired by his old school, Ashfield Boys School, Sydney.

The items can be seen worn by Young in media photos for the band from the period.

Young is also wearing it on the cover image for the sheet music for the single, "It's A Long Way To The Top."
