A study of around 5,000 older people found those with the condition were 35 percent more likely to develop dementia.
The findings are based on data pooled from studies across the world over the past 40 years.
Those experiencing menopause between the ages of 45 and 49 had an 11 percent chance of heart failure.
Around 4,000 American adults took part in the study.
The University of Pennsylvania team described the findings as "notable."

"If genetic testing is refused the condition may get worse."
The findings are based on 2,500 people tracked for 12 years.
