The findings were based on an analysis of 3.7 million adults in California.
More than 1.5 million 20 to 30-year-olds were included in the six-year study.
"When inhaled, these very small particles penetrate deeply into the lungs and enter the bloodstream and circulate throughout the body."
Significant improvement was demonstrated in motor function, sensory function, spatial learning and memory.
Researcher said: "Although our study is only small, the results are convincing."
The study in the Journal of Periodontology, tracked 158 middle-aged patients
"These results clearly show patients needn’t be afraid of statin therapy as it is very well tolerated in as much as 93 percent."
