Heroic bystanders rescue woman from burning car on New York highway

This is the moment heroic bystanders risked their own lives to rescue a 56-year-old woman from her burning vehicle on a New York state highway.

Video footage shows the moment the woman was pulled from the burning car and dragged across lanes of traffic away from the inferno.

The good Samaritan rescuers then carried her away after wrapping her in pieces of clothing.

The woman, from Farmingville, New York, is now in critical condition at a hospital.

The filmer said: "This is how my day started out driving Westbound on the LIE [Long Island Expressway before exit 61.

"These 5 BRAVE, COURAGEOUS PASSERSBY risked their lives to pull this Woman out of a BURNING FIREBALL of a CAR, to SAVE HER LIFE..!!

"I felt quite helpless, wishing that I had a FIRE EXTINGUISHER in my car, so I could do something to help. Went to the Store to buy 2 right away, so this NEVER happens again..!!

"THANK GOD FOR GOOD SAMARITANS / PASSERSBY- WHO HELP OTHERS IN NEED, praying for this Woman's Complete Recovery."

The incident occurred on the Long Island Expressway close to Holtsville and Holbrook on Jan. 18.
