James Bond toy car that cost just 19 cents in 1965 sells for hundreds

A toy James Bond car that cost just 10 shillings (19 cents) in 1965 went under the hammer for hundreds of dollars at auction

The mint condition Corgi 007 Goldfinger Aston Martin DB5, complete with box and Secret Service papers, fetched £720 ($858) at The Canterbury Auction Galleries in Kent amid fierce bidding.

It was originally valued at £200 to £300 ($238-$357) - but sold for more than double, plus a buyer’s premium of 23 percent.

The original price in 1965 was 10 shillings, about £9 ($10) in today’s money, meaning it has increased in value by 8,000 percent.

The toys were much sought after in the 60s among fans of the British secret agent then played by Sean Connery.

Many copies of the toy quickly weathered, with the box and secret service paperwork ending up crumpled, torn and discarded, the ejectable passenger seat missing and scratches on the car itself.

Examples of the original version, especially those in mint condition, have become very valuable with the most complete examples fetching high prices.

Some popular gadgets from the movie’s car, such as a working passenger ejector seat, were included.

Also supplied in the box in a hidden compartment were the owner’s top-secret documents and a 007 lapel badge.

Corgi won the first Toy of the Year Award in 1965 for their Goldfinger James Bond Aston Martin DB5.

The company produced subsequent versions of the Goldfinger Aston Martin – the last a 50th Anniversary edition in 2014 which was a complete sell-out – but none are as desirable as the original 261 model.
