This is the funny moment a Bernese mountain dog insisted on staying outside - despite temperatures plummeting to -40°F during a snowstorm.

Videos shows the pooch refusing to come back inside, lying outside until it was completely covered in snow and leaping around excitedly.

Owner Nicole Kramer, 26, snapped the video of nine-year-old pooch Macy while visiting her parents in Chicago for Christmas.

A nearly weeklong winter storm blasting much of the US brought freezing temperatures and blizzard conditions, with many major cities experiencing coldest Christmas in decades.

Nicole, a social media manager, said: "She loves the snow, no matter what we do she won't come in, we have to trick her or offer her tricks.

"That day she was on and off, but on any given winter day she will spend up to six hours outside.

She continued: "This Christmas the temperatures have been -40, it's been really difficult to be outside for more than 5 minutes."

"Living with Macy we've had to learn how to deal with snow outside, how to layer up, because her walks just get longer and longer in the winter.

"People were saying that it's animal cruelty to leave her outside, but she'll scratch the door for hours asking to be left out, she just loves it.

"She just loves it, she'll just stay out for as long as she can."
